Violeta Parra was a songwriter, folklorist, ethnomusicologist and visual artist. She was born in San Fabián de Alico, near Chillán, Ñuble Province.
She pioneered the Nueva canción chilena, a renewal and a
reinvention of Chilean folk music which would extend its sphere of
influence outside Chile
Among her most
popular songs are Gracias a la vida, Volver a los diecisiete. She took her
music to many parts of the world and this year is very important because is her
centenary.
I love Violeta
because I grew up in Ñuble so I could feel
all the love and power of the Parras's influence in art, music, dance, etc.
Violeta is an example of strength, talent and passion with
her protest songs
Violeta was a poor
rural girl who earned the respect of all with her talent and represents the
power of all the rural women who fight every day against inequities of class
and gender and centralism.
Gracias a la vida that gave us Violeta
